Long ago, this land was covered in maple trees. Long ago, it was called Wita Waste, Beautiful Island. Long ago, it was honored as sacred land by the Dakota People. Lots of folk have attachments to this island, now called Nicollet Island, the only inhabited island in the Mississippi River. Most of them are gone, but some never left. We see their shapes in the rain, hear their songs in the river, and feel their presence in the night.
